About Centre for Camel Research & Development (CCRD)
CCRD of the faculty veterinary medicine and animal husbandry is a dedicated scientific hub focused on the study, conservation, and sustainable development of camels, its run by democratically elected personnel in accordance with Somali National University (SNU).
In the context of Somalia camels represent far more than mere livestock, they are deeply embedded in the cultural identity and socio-economic fabric of the Somali people. Serving as a cornerstone of livelihoods, camels provide essential resources- their milk is a daily dietary staple, their meat is consumed as needed, and sale as it contributes significantly to household income, enabling families to meet everyday expenses. In arid environments, the practice of fermenting or souring camel milk not only extends its shelf life but also ensures food security during times when fresh milk is unavailable. Beyond their economic utility, camels are powerful cultural symbols of endurance and tradition, holding particular significance among Somali agro-pastoral communities, where they are regarded as one of the most valued and respected animals.
They are vital animals in arid and semi-arid regions, known for their ability to survive extreme temperatures, water scarcity, and poor vegetation. CCRD plays a key role in improving camel health, productivity, and livelihood support for communities that depend on them. Knowing the significance of Camel, Centre for Camel Research and Development (CCRD) was established to conduct scientific research and promote the sustainable use of camels in various sectors.
The Centre is a premier Hub dedicated to the scientific study, conservation, and sustainable utilization of camels. Recognizing the camel’s critical role in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, the centre focuses on multidisciplinary research encompassing camel physiology, genetics, breeding, nutrition, health management, and socio-economic importance. It serves as a hub for innovation, education, and outreach, supporting internship for the students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry of Somali National University, as well as pastoral communities and promoting camel-based livelihoods. Through advanced research and collaboration with the local, regional and international organizations, the Centre aims to enhance the productivity, resilience, and global relevance of Camel.
Our objectives:
The primary goal for CCRD is to advance knowledge about camels and enhance their productivity and utility in modern contexts, The centre focuses on:
Scientific research in camel genetics, physiology, reproduction, and nutrition
Health care and disease management specific to camels
Improvement of camel breeds through selective breeding programs
Promoting camel-based industries, such as dairy, wool, meat, and tourism
Supporting agro-pastoral communities that rely on camels, by providing training, veterinary services, and guidance
Conservation of camel breeds and their genetic diversity.
Development of camel-based industries, such as milk, meat, wool, and tourism.
Education and training for farmers, veterinarians, and researchers
Routine engagement:
Research and development: CCRD researchers conduct cutting-edge research on camel biology, diseases, milk production, and environmental adaptation, that contributes upgrading camel health and productivity.
Camel Breeding, genetic improvement and Conservation: CCRD maintains several breeds of camels, ensuring the conservation of indigenous genetic resources, as well as implementing selective breeding programs to enhance desirable traits like: higher milk yield, disease resistance, and endurance.
Camel Health and disease management: CCRD provides veterinary care and training to local herders and farmers. It also develops vaccines and treatment methods for common camel diseases.
Training and extension: CCRD coordinates workshops, seminars, and field visits regularly to educate internship students, farmers, veterinarians, and researchers on modern camel management techniques.
Camel-based products and innovation: The CCRD promotes value-added camel products such as camel milk, which is rich in nutrients and gaining popularity worldwide. Other products include camel wool, leather, and even camel tourism.
Significance: CCRD plays a vital role in;
Empowering rural and desert communities by improving their livelihood opportunities.
Conserving traditional knowledge while integrating it with modern science.
Contributing to food security in regions with limited agricultural capacity.
Fostering global awareness about the ecological and nutritional value of camels.
Encouraging climate resilience, as camels are well-suited to adapt to changing environmental conditions.
In conclusion, CCRD stands as a beacon of hope for Somali agro-pastoral communities living in the Somali diverse regions as well as globally. Offering scientific solutions and practical knowledge for the sustainable management of camels. Through its ongoing research, community outreach, and innovative programs, the centre not only preserves the cultural heritage associated with camels but also unlocks new economic and environmental possibilities. As climate challenges intensify, the role of camels and Centres like this will only grow in importance, proving once again that these unique animals are more than just survivors; they are assets to the future.
